 p>\n<p><strong>Short Abstract:</strong></p>\n<p>Downscaling ferroelectric
materials to nanometer and atomic dimensions is limited by depolarizing fi
elds\, which destabilize polarization\, suppress switchability\, and reduc
e retention. This thesis investigates para-aminobenzoic acid (pABA) molecu
lar layers as adaptive molecular electrodes for compensating polarization
charge in ultrathin BaTiO₃ (BTO) films. First\, epitaxial BTO/SrRuO₃ (
SRO) heterostructures are optimized by RF sputtering to obtain smooth\, re
producible ultrathin films. Piezoresponse Force Microscopy measurements th
en show that pABA functionalization significantly enhances polarization sw
itching\, enabling stable domain writing at higher scan speeds than bare f
ilms\, indicating faster and more effective screening than atmospheric ads
orbates.</p>\n<p>In the ultrathin regime\, pABA restores stable polarizati
on reversal and retention even below the conventional critical thickness.
Polarization-dependent tunneling measurements further demonstrate reproduc
ible tunneling electroresistance in 2-unit-cell BTO films\, confirmed by l
ocal CAFM and macroscopic current–voltage measurements. Overall\, this w
ork establishes molecular screening as a route to stable\, switchable\, at
 omic-scale ferroelectric tunnel junctions.</p>\n<p data-start="573" data-e
