Biological discovery is a driving force of biomedical progress. With rapid
ly advancing technology to collect and analyze information from cells and
tissues\, we generate biomedical knowledge at rates never before attainabl
e to science. Nevertheless\, conversion of this knowledge to patient benef
its remains a slow process. To accelerate the process of reaching solution
s for healthcare\, it would be important to strongly complement this cultu
re of discovery with a culture of problem-solving in healthcare. The talk
focuses on recent progress with optical and optoacoustic technologies\, in
cluding Multispectral Optoacoustic Tomography (MSOT) and Raster-scan Optoa
coustic Mesoscopy (RSOM)\, as well as computational methods\, as the means
to opening new paths for solutions in biology and medicine. Particular at
tention is given on the use of these technologies for early detection and
monitoring of disease evolution. The talk further shows new classes of ima
ging systems and sensors for assessing biochemical and pathophysiological
parameters of systemic diseases\, complement knowledge from –omic analyt
ics and drive integrated solutions for improving healthcare.
\n
<stro
ng>Bio: Professor Vasilis Ntziachristos studied Electrical Engine
ering at Aristotle University in Thessaloniki and received his M.Sc. and P
h.D. in Bioengineering from the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequentl
y joined Harvard University and Massachusetts General Hospital as Assistan
t Professor and Director of the Laboratory for Bio-Optics and Molecular Im
aging.
\n
Since 2007\, he has been Professor of Medicine and Electric
al Engineering at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) and Chair of Bi
ological Imaging\, while also serving as Director of the Institute of Biol
ogical and Medical Imaging at Helmholtz Munich. He is additionally Directo
r of Bioengineering at the Helmholtz Pioneer Campus and Head of the Bioeng
ineering Department at Helmholtz Munich.
\n
Prof. Ntziachristos is th
e founder of the journal Photoacoustics and has received numerous internat
ional honors\, including the Karl Heinz Beckurts Prize\, the Chaire Blaise
Pascal\, the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize\, and the Merck Future Insig
