he conversion of light into electrical signals is one of the most fundamen
tal phenomena underlying modern technologies. As emerging fields such as q
uantum technologies\, artificial intelligence\, and space exploration cont
inue to advance\, there is a growing need for fundamentally new photonic h
ardware. This requires new material discovery\, improved understanding of
photocurrent responses and engineering solutions to create real-world devi
ces. This talk will present our efforts to develop next-generation quantum
materials for optoelectronic devices using the highly tunable platform of
two-dimensional moiré superlattices. I will first discuss unconventional
optoelectronic responses arising from the quantum geometry of electronic
wavefunctions and demonstrate how they enable polarization-sensitive photo
detectors. I will then show how these quantum optoelectronic effects provi
de new insights into the exotic correlated phases of matter found in moir
é materials\, including states relevant to topological quantum computing.
Finally\, I will introduce non-equilibrium electronic phases in moiré su
perlattices as a route towards ultrasensitive photodetection\, highlightin
g a new platform for single-photon detectors with wavelength and operating
-temperature capabilities that extend beyond those of conventional superco
nducting technologies.
\n
Short bio: Dr. Roshan Kris
hna Kumar is a Ramón y Cajal Fellow at the Institut Català de Nanociènc
ia i Nanotecnologia (ICN2)\, where he leads a research program on terahert
z spectroscopy and quantum photonic technologies based on two-dimensional
moiré materials. He received his PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the
Universities of Manchester and Lancaster\, investigating electron transpo
rt in graphene and moiré superlattices. Following an EPSRC postdoctoral f
ellowship at the University of Manchester\, he joined ICFO as a Marie Skł
odowska-Curie Fellow\, where he led the FLAG-ERA PhotoTBG project developi
ng quantum photonic devices based on moiré superlattices. His research co
mbines quantum transport and photocurrent measurements to explore novel lo
w-dimensional materials\, with the aim of developing next-generation photo
nic and quantum technologies.
\n
Hosted by Pr
