Reaching out strategic audiences

Nanoscience is engaging and rewarding

The ICN2 is committed with the dissemination of science and innovation with society and for society. Nanoscience and nanotechnology are surprising and have an impact on our everyday life. The ICN2 has interacted in engaging and meaningful ways with different strategic audiences by tailoring specialised messages and events. Undergraduate students, families, companies, and other stakeholders have been involved in events, fairs and workshops led by the ICN2 or in which we participated.

The main objective is always bringing nanoscience closer to society while discussing the opportunities, challenges and risks that lay under new disruptive technologies. The permanent debate with social actors is the only way to ensure the prioritisation of the most demanded and useful applications, while preventing unwanted developments and promoting regulations when necessary.

Impact within the Severo Ochoa Programmes

The ICN2 dissemination and outreach strategy has experienced a deep transformation since the award of the first Severo Ochoa distinction back in 2014. While the first 4-year period (2014-2018) allowed the consolidation of a series of actions, including an ambitious educational programme meant to bring nanoscience closer to young undergraduate students (NanoEduca) and a travelling exhibit (DimensioNano), the second award (2018 – 2022) reinforced a team of professionals that brought the impact potential of the center to the next level.

A good example of that is the National Science Communication Award (FCRi and Catalan Government) earned by the ever-growing NanoEduca programme, together with ambitious actions such as the launch of the What The Física YouTube Channel and the first Virtual Reality interactive to present the results of a research funded with European projects (VRainCom, available for Android and iOs). With a growing number of research news, stronger social networks and equipped for a new era of hybrid events, the ICN2 faces the next years with new impact goals that go beyond what was possible a few years ago.

Showcasing the ICN2 potential in international events

The ICN2 has also developed a high capacity to attract visitors and opportunities during international events dedicated to different scientific topics. Event series such as Graphene Conference, Mobile World Congress or Puzzle X have seen a growing influence of the ICN2 technologies over the years. The scientific capabilities of the centre combined with the ability to generate eye catching demonstrators and promotional materials, as well as to create opportunities treasured by the B&I team, establish a synergy that leads to a strong presence of the ICN2 brand in international events. This potential is expanding and will reach new frontiers thanks to a well-structured inter-departmental strategy that will involve the scientific community and a plan to develop practical devices, designed to show applications of novel nanotechnologies to everyday life challenges.

ICN2 in the media

During the last few years, the ICN2 has also achieved unprecedented figures about media impact. Although focused on pandemic-related topics and few other leading research lines, the increased visibility of the centre has reinforced its role as a trusted source and partner for science journalists and general media. After a hard-to-match peak reached in 2020, media impacts figures have stabilised at well above those of previous years and we are committed to continue growing and improving our presence in the media.
