Title
Airy pattern
Technique
Reflection imaging in custom-built scanning transient absorption microscope.
Description
Specialist lens systems enable the focussing of light to the smallest possible size. Here a green laser is focussed onto a CD creating a bright central spot. By moving the CD out of focus a series of concentric rings appear - the Airy pattern. The breaks in the rings represent information stored on the CD. In our research we use this tightly focussed laser spot to probe the interplay between energy and heat at the nanoscale.
