LIFEmeetsLIGHT
Technique
The photos used to compose this image were taken with a smartphone in a dark box, where the bioluminescence of the bacteria can be appreciated. Tuning the parameters of the camera, light was accurately captured. Bacteria were grown on marine broth. We used an artistic brush soaked with bacteria grown culture to draw the strokes of the Chinese character representing "light", as well as our names, our reseach group and ICN2.
Description
Aliivibrio fischeri is a species of bioluminescent bacteria. Their natural environment is the sea, flowing free or in symbiosis with marine creatures, whom are provided with bioluminescence for mating and defence purposes thanks to the bacteria's light-emitting luciferase enzyme. We chose Chinese caligraphy to represent the character "light", as a means of artistic expression from the bacteria. A millenary artistic expression combined with the timeless fruits of nature
