The ICN2 participates in the IEEE-NANO online conference

ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol, ICREA Prof. Dr Clivia M. Sotomayor-Torres and Postdoctoral researcher Juliana Jaramillo are among the speakers of the event. Dr Juliana Jaramillo is one of the youngest plenary speakers in the whole conference series so far.


Barcelona equips itself with a European first-class collaborative microscopy platform

The ALBA Synchrotron will host two new major experimental facilities, one dedicated to materials science, valued at 4.1 million euros and led by the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), and another meant for molecular biology, valued at 1.7 million euros and headed by the Institute of Molecular Biology of Barcelona (IBMB-CSIC). The new platform also counts with the participation of BIST, CSIC, IRB Barcelona, UAB, ICMAB-CSIC and CRG. The provisional agreement for co-financing through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) these two scientific infrastructures has been announced today.






The ICN2 and Microsoft expand partnership in quantum computing research

The ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group is expanding its collaboration with the global network of Microsoft Quantum Labs in furtherance of Microsoft’s goal of developing a scalable quantum computer - a vastly more powerful informatics tool based on radically different physics principles. The ICN2 laboratories will provide atomic-scale measurements, analysis, and modelling of new materials.


Enhanced hematite-based photoanodes for more efficient solar water splitting cells

Cheaper and better performing photoelectrochemical water splitting cells could be designed in the next future thanks to a new technology developed at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC) and the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ). Recently published on Advanced Energy Materials, this research has involved the ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy group and the Nanostructured Materials for Photovoltaic Energy group.




Tune in to future polarity quantum devices

A thorough study published on NanoLetters and led by the ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy group provides new insights on the growth mechanisms and conditions that determine the polarity of semiconductor nanostructures. Fine control of polarity can result in the design of new quantum devices.


Better thermoelectric materials thanks to ligand mediation

Investigators from the ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group have collaborated in an international research to show that inorganic ligands can be used to improve the performance as a thermoelectric material of SnTe-CdSe nanocomposites. The efficiency obtained with this procedure is the highest reported for this material and was highlighted in the front cover of JACS.




Successful P-Sphere networking meeting

The UAB organised a meeting of researchers involved in the P-Sphere Cofund project to encourage synergies and collaborations. Up to 6 Postdoctoral Researchers from the ICN2 are part of this exciting initiative.


BIST holds its annual conference at CosmoCaixa

BIST Director General says modernising research facilities and providing training to boost the social impact of science are the top priorities of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology. The event, held at CosmoCaixa, offers an overview about several transversal research issues being tackled by the BIST institutions.



The ICN2 reopens its doors for this year's ESCOLAB

Lab tours give young students the opportunity to interact with real scientists and get a sense of what happens at a research centre. Last week almost 100 students came through our doors to learn about the research carried out at the ICN2. This event was made possible thanks to the participation of the researchers and admin personnel who gave up some their time to organise some unique experiences.


The ICN2 in two of the three BIST Ignite projects

The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology has awarded three second-phase grants to collaborative projects developed jointly by BIST member institutions. The ICN2's participation in two of the three successful projects is led by ICREA Prof. Jose Antonio Garrido and ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol.


Hematite-based nanowire structures to enhance solar-to-fuel conversion in photoelectrochemical water splitting

ICN2 researchers led by ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol, in collaboration with the IREC and ICIQ, have produced a material for use in photoelectrochemical water splitting that is not only cheaper than existing alternatives, but increases both the efficiency and output of the process. Based on the integration of several materials into a multilayer nanowire structure, the research was featured on the cover of this month’s Energy & Environmental Science.



NyNA 2017 brings together the analytical nanotechnology community

The VIII International Congress on Analytical Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (NyNA 2017) was held in Barcelona on 3-5 July. Its Organising Committee was formed by the ICN2 Group Leaders ICREA Prof. Arben Merkoçi, Prof. Laura Lechuga and ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol. The event was a unique opportunity to create enduring links and discuss the advancements in areas such as diagnostics, safety and security, environmental monitoring and other industrial applications.


BIST Ignite call winners announced at the BIST Founding Conference

The BIST Founding Conference brought together 300 participants and leading scientific experts from Barcelona and internationally.  Jean-Pierre Sauvage, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016, opened the conference as the keynote speaker. The conference included many thought-provoking sessions including dialogues run by experts in the four research areas that BIST has identified as strategic: chemical biology, graphene, big data, and microscopy. At the end of the ceremony, the winners of the BIST Ignite call were announced, including two projects participated by ICN2.



Surface hydrogen enables semiconductor nanowire subeutectic growth

Researchers from Georgia Institute of Technology and ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group have recently published an article in Nano Letters. They show an improvement made on the growth procedure of a semiconductor nanowire at subeutectic conditions using hydrogen. These results may have a positive effect on the CMOS technology.



Mad for Science 2016 was launched in a massive event

Over 200 students, together with their families and teachers, participated in the launch event of Mad for Science 2016 (Bojos per la Ciència), an initiative to bring High School students closer to real research. ICN2 co-coordinates the Mad for Physics Program, together with IFAE. Àlex Argemí, ICN2 Head of Marketing and Communication, presented the initiative.


Prof. Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski offers an ICN2 Seminar about recent progress in microscopy of nanomaterials

Prof. Rafal E. Dunin-Borkowski, Research Director of the Institute for Microstructure (Germany), presented a selection of recent results obtained in both high-resolution and Lorentz modes and offered a personal perspective on directions for the future development of transmission electron microscopy. ICREA Prof Jordi Arbiol, Group leader of the ICN2 Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group, presented this influential speaker.


How does the Titanium Oxide promote water oxidation in Hematite-based photoanodes?

Obtaining Hydrogen through water splitting may have broad energetic implications. Researchers from the Catalonia Institute for Energy Research (IREC), with ICREA Prof Jordi Arbiol’s Group at ICN2, recently published in Energy & Environmental Science a systematic mechanistic study of the origin of the Titanium-induced enhanced photoactivity in Hematite-based photoanodes.
