LEARNING OBJECTIVES: The speaker will describe the characteristics of the Biolab Facility, give an overview of the available equipment and service offered, briefly show the requirements and steps to obtain access to the facility, and discuss administrative aspects associated with work in the Biolab.

  • Short history of the construction of the Biolab Facility
  • Brief overview over the four different Biological Risk Group levels with examples
  • Explanation of Containment Levels of laboratories
  • Characteristics of the Biolab: physical containment and operational practices of BSL-2+
  • Description of different types of biological agents
  • Equipment and specifications: Biological Safety Cabinet vs Laminar Flow Hood, incubators, cryogenic storage tank, autoclaves, microscopes, centrifuges
  • Selection of service offered: cryopreservation of mammalian cells, mycoplasma testing, cell cytotoxicity and/or viability assays, bacterial culture and glycerol stocks, diverse biological assays
  • How to become a user of the Biolab Facility
  • Presentation of the Institutional Biosafety Program
  • Biosafety Committe of the UAB: how to prepare and send notifications about planned activities
