NanoTHERM: a new Spanish initiative tackles the energy challenge

NanoTHERM, coordinated by the Phononics and Photonics Nanostructures (P2N) Group, led by ICREA Prof. Dr. Clivia Sotomayor Torres at the Catalan Institute of Nanotechnology (ICN) in Barcelona, is a CONSOLIDER-INGENIO 2010 project funded by the Spanish Ministry for Science and Innovation.

The consortium, gathering 9 Spanish institutions, will develop new nano-scale thermoelectric materials and composites which have to be simultaneously good thermal isolators and good electrical conductors, for use in thermoelectric generators for low and high temperature operation. The work will span the full value chain from theory on thermal conductivity at the nanometer scale, through material design, synthesis and benchmarking, to device validation.

The project has been granted 3.9 M€ and will run for five years from December 2010 to 2015.
