ICN Group Leader co-edits European policy report on Nanophotonics and Nanophononics

Prof Dr Clivia M Sotomayor Torres co-edits nanoICT position paper calling for increased European support for Nanophotonics and Nanophononics R&D

ICREA Research Professor and UAB Professor Dr Clivia M Sotomayor Torres, who leads the ICN's Phononics and Photonics Nanostructures (P2N) Research Group, and Prof Jouni Ahopelto of VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland have co-edited an instrumental report aimed at garnering increased European support for Nanophotonics and Nanophononics R&D. The position paper outlines the official recommendations of the nanoICT Coordination Action, which forms part of the European Commission's 7th Framework Programme and is spear-headed by the Spanish foundation PHANTOMS.

The nanoICT report, which includes contributions from over 30 European researchers, addresses the state-of-the-art in Photonics and Phononics at the nanoscale, analyses European needs in this area, and presents four recommendations to the European Commission. Firstly, the authors call for "European-level support for fundamental research in application-relevant nanophotonics and nanophononics." Secondly, they propose that researchers from diverse fields be brought together to create a "focused research programme on heat control in the nanoscale... and on harvesting fluctuations." Thirdly, they suggest establishment of "a research infrastructure for emerging cost-efficient nanofabrication methods jointly with a multi-level simulation hub and a comprehensive nanometrology associated laboratory targeting nanophotonics and nanophononics applications". Lastly, they recommend "targeted European-level support for research on material sciences to develop techniques able to achieve material control at the sub-nanometre and, in particular, in 3-dimensions."

nanoICT's "Position Paper on Nanophotonics and Nanophononics" was submitted to the EC in December 2011 and will be published in hard copy soon, but can already be read online here at the P2N Group website.
