Professors i Ciencia at ICN: where schoolteachers learn about nano

ICN holds course for Professors i Ciencia, the educational programme funded by CatalunyaCaixa to train secondary school teachers in new areas of science

Seventeen teachers have come to ICN today to learn about Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and how they can introduce these fields into their classrooms.

Today, 9 May, ICN is hosting seventeen secondary school science teachers from around Catalonia in its course for Professors i Ciencia (Teachers and Science), the educational programme started last year by CatalunyaCaixa to train secondary school teachers in new areas of science. Several Catalan research centres are participating in the programme by teaching a course related to their area of expertise. 2012 is the first year in which ICN participates.

ICN's course, Nanociencia per a tothom (Nanoscience for everyone), will provide attendees with an introduction to the areas of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology,using materials adapted from the upcoming museum exhibit Dimensió Nano (http://www.dimensionano.cat/index.php/ca/).

The objectives of the course are to:

• Explain the key concepts of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and point out relevant examples of nanoscale phenomena in nature;

• Highlight current products on the market that incorporate Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, while offering a glimpse into future commercial applications enabled by these fields;

• Discuss controversial issues related to Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, such as potential risks associated to the use of nanoparticles, from scientific, societal, legal and ethical perspectives;

• And to provide the teachers with materials to conduct related science experiments in their own classrooms.

Moreover, the attendees will also be visiting some of ICN's labs and meeting various ICN researchers.
