ICN names Dr Aitor Mugarza as Tenure Track Group Leader

Dr Aitor Mugarza, a Ramon y Cajal Researcher in ICN’s Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group, has just been named Tenure Track Group Leader.

ICN's Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group has a new Group Leader: Dr Aitor Mugarza. Dr Mugarza has spent the past 5 years as Ramon y Cajal Researcher in the Group, acquiring ever-greater responsibilities. His appointment as Group Leader coincides with Dr Gambardella's recent appointment as Full Professor of Magnetism and Interface Physics at ETH Zurich. Dr Gambardella will remain with ICN throughout 2013 to complete on-going projects.

Dr Mugarza holds a BS (1997) and a PhD (2002) in Physics from the University of the Basque Country. He later pursued post-doctoral positions at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA) and the Instituto de Ciencia de Materiales de Barcelona (ICMAB), until joining ICN in 2007 as a a Ramon y Cajal Researcher. Dr Mugarza held a Marie Curie post-doctoral fellowship from 2005-2007, and a Ramón y Cajal Fellowhsip from 2007-2012, through which he began three new projects:  "Electronic and magnetic properties at the molecule-metal interface", "Electronic properties of graphene nanoislands grown on nickel" and "Electron scattering in materials with strong spin-orbit coupling". His areas of expertise include the electronic and magnetic properties of single atoms and molecules and of hybrid metal-organic layers; scattering and electron confinement in low-dimensional systems; and single-molecule chemistry and manipulation.
