Marcos Rosado’s SEM image of blooming Yellow Mimosa flower among winning images in May/June edition of FEI and National Geographic’s 2013 image contest.

A Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) image submitted by Marcos Rosado, a technician in ICN2's Electron Microscopy Division, has been chosen as the winning entry in "The Natural World" category of the May/June edition of the 2013 image contest run by Electron microscope manufacturer FEI and publisher National Geographic. The image of a freshly picked budding Yellow Mimosa (Acacia dealbata) flower, acquired on a FEI Quanta 650 F microscope, was taken at 69x magnification and then colour-treated in Photoshop®. The contest categories (The Natural World, The Human Body, and Around the House) correspond to the themes of the National Geographic film "Mysteries of the Unseen World".
