A simple method to grow tubular single-layered nanomaterials

A work recently published in Advanced Materials, led by ICMAB-CSIC and participated by Dr Belén Ballesteros, Leader of the ICN2 Electron Microscopy Division, reports a new method to grow single-layered inorganic nanotubes. Researchers used the inner cavities of carbon nanotubes as hosting templates.

The isolation and growth of single layers of a wide variety of inorganic materials is of interest for both fundamental research and advanced applications. Nanotubes are made of an individual layer of the material wrapped into a cylinder to combine the characteristics of both two-dimensional (2D) and one-dimensional (1D) materials. Yet, despite their interest, reports on single-walled inorganic nanotubes are scarce because their multiwalled counterparts are in general favoured during growth.

A work recently published in Advanced Materials reports a simple method to grow single-layered inorganic nanotubes. The study was led by researchers from the Institut de Ciencia de Materials de Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC) and participated by Dr Belén Ballesteros, Leader of the ICN2 Electron Microscopy Division. Researchers used the inner cavities of carbon nanotubes as hosting templates to grow single-crystalline lead iodide single-layered nanotubes. This facile method is highly versatile opening up new horizons in the preparation of single-layered nanostructures.

The fundamental physics and chemistry of the resulting materials was explored using aberration corrected electron microscopy and first-principles quantum mechanical calculations. The theoretical studies show that the single-layered nanotubes are stable and their electronic structure is found to be diameter independent. Thanks to this study the formation of tubular single-layered nanomaterials of different nature, whose diameter is merely determined by the host, are now easier to produce.
