Companies invited by PRUAB visit the ICN2

The purpose of the meeting was to show the current progress in Key Enabler Technologies (KET) in Catalonia and their real implementation in companies.

Today morning the UAB Research Park (PRUAB) hosted a meeting with companies under the title "Nanotechnology, the European Union Challenge of Innovation". The event, which included a visit to ICMAB and ICN2, was held under the KET series of meetings organized by the Cercle Tecnologic de Catalunya (CTecno), the Societat Economica Barcelonesa d’Amics del Pais (SEBAP) and the Xarxa de Parcs Cientifics i Tecnologics de Catalunya (XPCAT). The purpose of this meeting was to show the current progress in Key Enabler Technologies (KET) in Catalonia and their real implementation in companies.

After the welcome by Dr. Buenaventura Guamis, PRUAB’s Director, Dr. Xavier Obradors, Director of the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB - CSIC) has introduced the concept of nanotechnology and the Barcelona Nanotechnology Cluster - Bellaterra (BNC-b), which he also directs. During his speech he explained the complex process leading from a new discovery to an application in the market. The chain is long and the actors may change during the process, but a vivid communication between academia and business is useful to identify the most attractive opportunities.

Afterwards success cases presented collaborations between research carried at UAB and companies. Firstly, Fouad Salhi, Head of Advanced Technology at Henkel Group, spoke about the collaborative research carried out by Henkel. This company has an extensive program of co-operation with different centers located at the Bellaterra Campus, including ICN2. Finally, Santi Sala, founder of the company, presented the spin-off Nanomol Technologies. This company is involved in European projects and clinical trials studying different therapeutic approaches for various applications such as glioblastomas or healing tissues.

The event ended with a visit to ICN2 and ICMAB. The visit to ICN2 was organized by Jordi Reverter, manager of the Technology Transfer Department, Boaz Kogon, manager of the Strategy Department, and members of the ICN2 NanoBioSensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group, led CSIC Prof. Laura M. Lechuga. The Communication Department coordinated a visit which brought the work done at the Institute closer to 30 people from different companies who participated in the event.
