Prof. Laura Lechuga talks at CCCB about nanotechnology used to detect cancer

The act was held within the framework of the Quantum exhibition. Dr Ferran Guedea and Prof. Laura Lechuga presented some topics related to the science behind the detection and treatment of cancer.

Within the framework of the Quantum exhibition, last 25 June CCCB held a talk on quantum technologies used on the detection and treatment of cancer. The act counted with the participation of Dr Ferran Guedea, from the Institut Català d’Oncologia, and Prof. Laura Lechuga, Group Leader of the ICN2 NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group.

The act started with a brief explanation of the concept of cancer by Dr Guedea, who commented on the multitude of factors to be considered when dealing with a cancer, both regarding the tumour itself and the particular patient. He also sketched out different kind of treatments, such as HIFU (High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound) or cryotherapy and ended his presentation with some advice on cancer prevention.

Next, Prof. Lechuga presented some quantum phenomena used in medicine. For instance, the fluorescence of quantum dots is used in the detection in vivo of cancer, as these particles illuminate the affected area, even if there are very few cancer cells. The speaker also explained some biosensors based on nanophotonics and nanoplasmonics, and some of the research being developed by her group at the ICN2. For instance, she explained that they were working on a project for the early detection of colon cancer: the idea is to produce a test that will detect the specific antibodies generated by the patient.

The event concluded with questions from the public, who had followed the talk with interest and took this great opportunity to share their doubts with the experts. Cira Pérez, from the CCCB, finally closed the act and invited the audience to go to the next activities related to the Quantum exhibition.
