From March 30 to April 1, ICN2 hosted a scientific workshop marking the final meeting of the ULTIMATE-I project (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Staff Exchange Action), “Ultra Thin Magneto Thermal Sensoring”. This international initiative brings together researchers from across Europe and South America, fostering collaboration in advanced magnetic materials and spintronic technologies. The meeting was organised by Dr José Santiso and Dr Jose Caicedo (Nanomaterials Growth Unit), as well as Dr Jessica Padilla (X-ray diffraction facilities). It was devoted to fundamental studies of magnetic materials based on thin metal and oxide films, as well as heterostructures, with the goal of advancing spintronic thermal sensor devices. Key topics included phenomena such as the inverse spin Hall effect and the spin Seebeck effect.

The workshop gathered around 35 participants from the ULTIMATE-I consortium, along with prominent invited speakers: Prof. Jordi Sort (ICN2 Nanomaterials for Advanced Memory and Computing Group / UAB), Dr Mariela Menghini (IMDEA Nanociencia, Madrid), and Dr Anna Palau (ICMAB). They shared their insights on emerging strategies in magnetic and quantum materials for Information and Communication Technologies.

The programme also featured a round-table discussion focused on future opportunities within the Horizon Europe Framework Programme, aiming to continue and expand the collaboration towards a broader international research network. Additionally, participants enjoyed a guided tour of the ALBA Synchrotron facility, providing first-hand insight into one of Europe’s leading research infrastructures.
