The European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) has announced the appointment of ICREA Prof. Stephan Roche, leader of the ICN2 Theoretical and Computational Nanoscience Group, as a new member of the institution. Prof. Roche will join the Materials Science Division.

Prof. Roche is internationally recognised for his work on quantum materials, spintronics, and computational nanoscience, as well as for developing simulation methods capable of tackling complex material systems at the atomic scale. His key contributions include the pioneering development of linear-scaling computational methods, which enable the quantum response and properties of materials to be studied at the mesoscopic scale.

The European Academy of Sciences (EurASc) is an institution that promotes excellence in scientific research and technological innovation, bringing together fundamental and interdisciplinary science as a driver of progress and societal development. In welcoming Prof. Roche, the Academy highlights his record of more than 350 scientific publications, as well as his contributions to the Graphene Flagship initiative and other achievements throughout his career, including the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award.

His research in computational materials has also led to the creation of Apeiron Intelligence, an ICN2 spin-off that combines artificial intelligence, atomic-scale simulations and advanced computational methodologies to develop innovative solutions for the design and engineering of new materials.

Prof. Roche’s election to EurASc further recognises a scientific career that encompasses fundamental research, the development of new computational tools, innovation, and technology transfer. The ICN2 community warmly congratulates Prof. Roche on this well-deserved recognition.
