Our research

ICN2 is a leading research centre dedicated to advancing knowledge in nanoscience and nanotechnology. Our distinctiveness lies in an integrated interdisciplinary model that bridges curiosity-driven science and application-oriented research. We bring together expertise in physics, chemistry, materials science, biology, engineering and computation, creating a collaborative environment that goes beyond traditional disciplinary boundaries. With the impulse of the three consecutive Severo Ochoa accreditations, the ICN2 research has achieved the highest impact and excellence levels.

Our 20 research groups cover a broad and complementary range of research areas, including nanomaterial growth and characterisation, theoretical modelling and simulation, and the study of interactions with biological systems.

A key aspect of our work is fundamental research, which seeks to understand the principles that govern matter at the nanoscale. By investigating the mechanisms underlying electronic, optical, magnetic and other effects at this scale, we aim to uncover new phenomena and expand scientific knowledge.

Alongside fundamental research, ICN2 conducts applied research, developing advanced materials, nanodevices, and innovative technologies in a variety of fields. This integrated approach enables us to contribute to addressing some of today's major scientific and societal challenges.

Research Groups
Research Groups

Our research groups are the core of the scientific activity of ICN2. Led by internationally recognised Group Leaders, the 20 groups of ICN2 bring together senior researchers, postdoctoral researchers, PhD students and technicians working at the frontier of nanoscience.
