ICN2 LeaderSHE Talks - TALKS BY WOMEN WHO LEAD THE WAY IN DIFFERENT PROFESSIONAL FIELDS

Organised by ICN2 Equal Opportunities Committee

By Solange Binotto Fagan, Professor and Vice-Rector at the Franciscan University (UFN) and Vice-Coordinator of the National Brazilian  Institute of Science and Technology for Carbon Nanomaterials (INCT)

Abstract: What is the path to establishing oneself as a scientific leader while simultaneously opening doors for the next generations? In this edition of LeaderSHE talks, Prof. Solange Binotto Fagan shares her personal and professional journey in Condensed Matter Physics. A leading expert in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology, with a focus on the simulation of carbon-based nanomaterials applied to healthcare and environmental remediation, Solange will discuss the defining challenges of her career path in academic and scientific management, the experiences and impacts of motherhood, and how these factors shaped her role in the pursuit of equity in science. The presentation will feature insights into the Rede de Mulheres na Nanociência (Women in Nanoscience Network), a powerful national mentorship initiative that connects established scientists with basic education teachers and students across Brazil, strengthening female leadership and inspiring new talents in nanotechnology.

Bio: Solange Binotto Fagan is a Full Professor and Vice-Rector at the Franciscan University (UFN), and a reference in Physics and Nanoscience. Her research focuses on 1D and 2D carbon nanomaterials, with an emphasis on computational simulations and technological applications, with H - 31 and more than 180 published papers. She serves as the Vice-Coordinator of the National Brazilian  Institute of Science and Technology for Carbon Nanomaterials (INCT), a network that brings together over 100 researchers to develop advanced technologies using graphene and carbon nanotubes. Driven by a commitment to regional development, Prof. Fagan coordinates the INOVA-RS program in the Central Region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, driving innovation by bridging academia, the productive sector, and government. An awardee of the prestigious L'Oréal/ABC/UNESCO For Women in Science program in 2006, she is internationally recognized for her advocacy for gender equity in STEM. In this field, she coordinates the Women in Nanoscience Network, a nationwide initiative comprising over 100 researchers and 200 basic education students and teachers across all regions of Brazil, fostering science and entrepreneurship for a more equitable future. Throughout her career, Prof. Fagan seamlessly combines academic excellence, institutional leadership, and meaningful social impact.
