The NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry group welcomed two students from this established Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera programme for a three-week research stay. During their time at ICN2, they experienced life in a research laboratory and worked alongside ICN2 scientists, offering a first-hand experience of research aimed at addressing sustainability and climate challenges.

Following the success of previous editions, ICN2 once again took part in Joves i Ciència (Youth and Science), a programme run by the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera that encourages scientific vocations among secondary school students with a keen interest in research. This year, the institute hosted two students for a three-week research stay with the NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry Group, as part of Phase II of the programme.

During their time at ICN2, the students participated in the daily research activities of the group, working alongside Dr Camilo Mesa, Dr Sebastián Murcia, Dr Silvia Favero, and other team members. Over the three-week period, through laboratory work, scientific discussions and mentorship, they gained hands-on experience of experimental techniques and observed first-hand how cutting-edge scientific research is conducted at a nanoscience institute.

As part of their research placement, the students contributed to the synthesis and use of advanced electrocatalysts for sustainable chemistry. They explored how a new generation of catalysts can use renewable electricity to develop more sustainable methods of producing fuels and chemicals, thereby helping to address some of today's major energy and environmental challenges. In the words of Dr Camilo Mesa: “One of the most rewarding aspects of participating in Joves i Ciència is seeing how quickly students become engaged with scientific research when they are given the opportunity to experience it first-hand. Through this programme, we not only introduce young people to STEM careers, but also encourage them to think about how science can help tackle some of the major challenges facing humanity, including climate change and the transition towards a more sustainable future. Planting this seed of curiosity and responsibility is essential for shaping the next generation of researchers and innovators.”

Through initiatives such as Joves i Ciència, ICN2 continues to support science outreach and inspire the next generation of researchers by bringing nanoscience and nanotechnology closer to young people with an interest in science and innovation.
