Prof. Jordi Sort received his PhD in Materials Science from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) in 2002 (Extraordinary Award), with a dissertation on magnetic exchange interactions in ferromagnetic–antiferromagnetic systems. He carried out postdoctoral research at the SPINTEC Laboratory (Grenoble) and Argonne National Laboratory (USA), and long secondments at the Grenoble High Magnetic Fields Laboratory, and Los Alamos National Laboratory. He leads the Nanomaterials for Advanced Memory and Computing Group at ICN2, where novel nanoscale-material-based memory and computing concepts with enhanced write/read energy efficiency are developed, and the Smart Nanoengineered Materials, Nanomechanics and Nanomagnetism Group at UAB, focused on fundamental advances in the magnetic, magnetoelectric, and nanomechanical properties of materials that go beyond the state of the art.
Prof. Sort has supervised > 20 PhD theses and published around 400 articles, which have received over 14,200 citations (h > 60, Web of Science). His work appears in top-ranked journals such as Nature Communications, ACS Nano, Advanced Materials, Advanced Science, Materials Horizons, ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, and Nanoscale. He holds 8 patents and has been invited or plenary speaker at more than 100 conferences.
Prof. Sort has received several prestigious awards, including the Jordi Porta i Jué Prize (2000), the Spanish Royal Physical Society Young Researcher Award (2003), the FEMS Prize in Materials Science & Technology (2015), and the Duran Farell Award for Technological Research (2020). He was awarded an ERC Consolidator Grant in 2014 for the project SPIN-PORICS, coordinated the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Networks SELECTA and BeMAGIC, and received an ERC Advanced Grant in 2022 for the project REMINDS, focused on the use of magnetoelectric materials for data security. Additionally, he has been PI of two ERC Proof of Concept grants and several other national and European research projects.
