From 5 to 7 November 2025, the University of Barcelona (UB) hosted the 8th Meeting of X-ray Diffraction Service Technicians and Managers (8ª Reunión de Personal Técnico y Responsables de Servicios de Difracción), a key event for scientists working with X-ray diffraction techniques. Co-organised by the Scientific and Technological Centres (CCiTUB) of the UB, the ICN2 X-ray Diffraction Facility, ICMAB and UAB, the meeting provided a valuable forum for the exchange of knowledge, ideas and experiences within this field.

During the three-day event, participants explored strategic topics such as the applications of diffraction in advanced materials, structural characterisation under extreme conditions, and the latest innovations in instrumentation and automation. The meeting brought together experts from all areas of diffraction —including powder samples, thin films and single crystals— to discuss recent advances and emerging challenges.

Highlights included plenary talks by Juan Rodríguez Carvajal (Senior Fellow of the ILL Laue-Langevin) and Judith Juanhuix i Gibert (XAIRA Beamline responsible at ALBA Synchrotron). The programme also featured interactive round tables focusing on the vital contribution of technical staff to research advancement and the key challenges faced by diffraction and crystallography services.

ICN2 was represented by Jessica Padilla and José Santiso, head of the X-ray Diffraction Facility,  who were also actively involved in the organisation and moderation of the event. Additionally, José Santiso delivered a talk on “In-situ XRD studies of thin films under different external stimuli: temperature, gas atmosphere changes, electrical voltage, or illumination”, showcasing ICN2’s expertise in advanced structural characterisation of materials.

The meeting concluded with a visit to the ALBA Synchrotron, where participants had the opportunity to explore its cutting-edge facilities dedicated to the structural study of materials. At ICN2, we would like to thank all the participants, the co-organising institutions and the sponsors who made this edition possible. See you next year!
