Vanguardia de la Ciencia award: Vote for nanoporous graphene!

La Vanguardia has selected the “nanoporous graphene” among the candidates to win its prestigious award Vanguardia de la Ciencia. The research describing the synthesis of a graphene membrane with pores whose size, shape and density can be tuned with atomic precision was published in Science by the ICN2 Group led by the ICREA Prof. Aitor Mugarza together with other ICN2 members, the CiQUS and the DIPC. The winner will be one of the 8 candidates that will be selected through popular vote.

ICREA research Prof. Aitor Mugarza and Dr. César Moreno, from the ICN2 Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group, are heading the “nanoporous graphene” candidature to win the prestigious Vanguardia de la Ciencia award. This prize is a joint initiative of the Godó Group and the Fundació Catalunya-La Pedrera. Candidates to win it are chosen based on research excellence and affiliation with a Spanish institution. It was established in 2011 to give more visibility to scientists in Spain and seeks to make scientific breakthroughs as popular as those achieved by athletes and musicians.

Vote for nanoporous graphene!

Researchers at the ICN2, the CiQUS research centre at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) successfully synthesised a graphene membrane with pores whose size, shape and density can be tuned with atomic precision at the nanoscale. Led by ICREA Prof. Aitor Mugarza from the ICN2 and Prof. Diego Peña from CiQUS, this work brought us one step closer to unlocking the potential of this much lauded material in electronics, and in filtration and sensing applications. Published in Science with ICN2 researcher Dr. César Moreno as first author, it included among its authors Dr Aran Garcia-Lekue from the DIPC and the ICN2 researchers ICREA Prof. Sergio O. Valenzuela, Group Leader of the ICN2 Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices Group, Dr Gustavo Ceballos, Head of the ICN2 Research Support Division, Dr Marcos Paradinas and Dr Marius V. Costache.

The newspaper readers are who will vote for their favourite candidate through the La Vanguardia website. Among the candidates are issues related with genetics, economics, autoimmune diseases or astronomy. All researches are excellent, including two from IRB and ICFO which are together with ICN2 founding members of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST). Nevertheless, the research on nanoporous graphene led by the ICN2 deserves a chance to win.
