Prof. Laura Lechuga, leader of the ICN2 Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group, received today the "XVIII Burdinola Research Award" in recognition of her career path and important work in the field of nanosensors for medical applications.
Today, June 28, the ceremony of the XVIII Burdinola Research Award was held at the Casa de Convalescéncia of the UAB, in Barcelona. This prestigious honor was established in 1993 by Burdinola, a company based in Vizcaya specialized in the design and installation of laboratories, to encourage the scientific community and to support it. After many important personalities in Spain, this year the Award was assigned to Prof. Laura Lechuga, leader of the ICN2 Nanobiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group.
The event was introduced by Dr Lluis Rovira, Director of CERCA –which supported Prof. Lechuga’s candidacy– and by Mikel Martínez, CEO of Burdinola, who talked about the mission of the Company and its involvement in scientific research. The General Director of the Euskoiker Foundation and Secretary of the Jury of the Award, Prof. Alfonso Hernández, was also invited to read the official declaration of the Jury of the Award. Prof. Lechuga was selected out of 16 outstanding candidates for her distinguished career, her relevant research in nanobiosensiors and nanomedicine, as well as for her effort towards the transfer to the clinical world (and the market) of the technologies developed within her group.
After receiving the plaque of the Award from the hands of Mikel Martínez, Prof. Lechuga took the floor to give an overview talk about her research in photonic biosensors, her contributions to nanomedicine and the future of this field. She also explained briefly her current EU funded project CoNVaT for the diagnostic of the COVID-19 disease.
