By Prof. Serhiy Cherevko, Helmholtz-Institute Erlangen-Nuremberg for Renewable Energy (IET-2),  Erlangen, Germany

Abstract: This talk explores two contrasting approaches to experimental research in the improvement of existing and the discovery of advanced electrocatalytic materials. The first is the traditional, in-depth methodology that leverages advanced in-situ and operando characterization techniques to uncover the mechanisms governing catalyst activity, stability, and selectivity. The second approach embraces high-throughput screening platforms, often guided by AI, to rapidly identify promising catalysts and optimal operational conditions. The talk concludes by discussing how these two paradigms can be combined to accelerate materials discovery and facilitate their integration into real-world systems.

Short Bio:Dr. Serhiy Cherevko leads the Electrochemical Energy Conversion group at the Helmholtz Institute Erlangen-Nürnberg for Renewable Energy (HI ERN), Germany. Prior to joining HI ERN in 2016, he worked as a postdoctoral scientist at the Max Planck Institute for Iron Research (MPIE), Germany. He earned his Ph.D. in Nanoscience from Sungkyunkwan University (SKKU), Republic of Korea, in 2009, and his M.Sc. in Physics (with honors) from Karazin University, Ukraine, in 2004.

His research bridges natural science and engineering, focusing on both fundamental and applied aspects. These include the physical chemistry of oxidation and dissolution of metals and semiconductors; electrocatalysis and interfacial electrochemistry; and electrochemical engineering topics such as the development and optimization of catalyst layers for fuel cells and water electrolysis.
