First Scientific Communication in Materials Science, hosted by ICMAB

This event will bring together researchers, journalists and science communication professionals to discuss the challenges and opportunities of communicating materials science to different audiences.

The event has been designed around top-tier speakers and topics that we believe are highly relevant to anyone interested in science communication.

The conference starts at 9.00 with a welcome session, followed by a plenary lecture by Mark Miodownik and two keynote talks by Núria Coll (our first Journalist in Residence) and Montserrat Capellas (ESRF). After the coffee break, there will be two further keynote talks by Michele Catanzaro (UAB) and Julia Parker (DLS).

  • Mark Miodownik (UCL): The joys and frustrations of communicating materials science to a wide variety of audiences
  • Núria Coll (7Ciències/El Nacional): From Lab to Society and Academia: Storytelling for Impact
  • Montserrat Capellas (ESRF): Communicating complex science: New tools, formats and stories
  • Michele Catanzaro (UAB/El Periódico/Nature): A lot to gain from each other: Building a constructive relation between material scientists and journalists
  • Julia Parker (Diamond Light Source): Project M – 1000 sample, 100 schools, one great big experiment

All these talks will be in English.

To finish the morning, we will have a round table with all participants in the morning session to discuss together the topics.

After lunch, we will have a Catalan session. We will start the afternoon with three talks: by Marc Masip (VerifiCat), Agustí Nieto (IHC-UAB) and Laura Francés (La Vanguardia).

  • Marc Masip (Verificat): Desinformació amb la ciència de materials: de la por al desconegut al pensament màgic
  • Agustí Nieto-Galán (IHC-UAB): «Feu-me confiança»: Expertesa, autoritat i comunicació en temps incerts
  • Laura Francés (La Vanguardia): Del paper a la notícia: com funciona el periodisme científic

These talks will be in Catalan, and will be followed by a round table to be able to discuss the topics with the speakers.
