How can nanoscience and nanotechnology contribute to a safer, more sustainable future? This question guided the first SustainableNano Conference, held on 14 May 2026 in IMDEA Nanociencia and organised by the Spanish Network on Safe and Sustainable Nanotechnologies (SNSSN). Bringing together the centres that make up the SNSSN network for the first time in this format, the event focused on five key areas, aligned with those covered in the Libro Blanco de las Nanotecnologías III:

  • Nanomaterials
  • Energy and sustainability
  • Water, environment and agri-food
  • Nanomedicine
  • Nanotechnology & ICT

The agenda, opened by Prof. Pablo Ordejón, SNSSN Coordinator and ICN2 Director, and Prof. Enrique Cánovas, Executive Director of IMDEA Nanociencia, reflected the network’s interdisciplinary nature. Topics ranged from smart windows, quantum thermocouples, sustainable thermoelectric generators, and nanophotonic design to medical microrobots for precision women’s healthcare, antimicrobial control and environmental remediation, nanoparticle delivery systems, photovoltaic materials, greener composites, mechanochemical synthesis of 2D materials, and solar-driven materials synthesis.

ICN2 contributed to the scientific programme with several presentations and sessions activities:

  • Prof. Pablo Ordejón chaired the first session.
  • Dr Claudio Roscini delivered the talk “Smart Windows: from building energy-deficient elements to energy-saving devices”.
  • Poster: "Searching for Sustainability on the Synthesis of Nanoparticles" (Dr Alejandro G. Roca, Magnetic Nanostructures Group)
  • Poster: "Monolithic UiO-66 composites incorporating metal oxide nanoparticles for enhanced as (iii) and as (v) removal under continuous flow" (Gerard Pena, Supramolecular NanoChemistry and Materials Group)
  • Poster: "Sustainable nanobiosensor fabrication via benchtop assembly strategies" (Massimo Urban, Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors Group)

The conference concluded with the REDES 2022 end-of-project meeting, during which the network members reviewed the activities carried out since 2023 and discussed their future goals. Overall, the 1st SustainableNano Congress demonstrated the consolidation of SNSSN as a solid entity in nanoscience and nanotechnology in Spain.
