At ICN2, we explore the nanoscale to push the boundaries of scientific knowledge. As a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence, we bring together talented people, interdisciplinary research and cutting-edge facilities to create knowledge with global impact.

Know-how in Nanoscience

ICN2 researchers bring decades of expertise across the field of nanoscience. We invest in the professional growth of every person at our institute: through workshops, seminars, language courses, specialised training and support for conference participation.

Cultural Diversity

Our community spans more than 48 nationalities. The diversity of backgrounds, languages and perspectives is not incidental — it is one of the things that makes our science stronger.

HR Excellence Badge

ICN2 holds the HR Excellence in Research Badge since 2015, recognising our commitment to providing transparent, fair and researcher-friendly working conditions and fostering a stimulating and supportive working environment in line with the European Charter for Researchers.

Flexible Schedule

We offer flexible working hours and access to the UAB Campus facilities — sport, services and a research environment that extends beyond the lab.

Training & Development

We support continuous learning and professional growth through tailored programmes for PhD and postdoctoral researchers, administrative staff and research support professionals. These are complemented by workshops, seminars, specialised training, language courses and participation in relevant conferences and events.

Working Conditions & Benefits

ICN2 provides competitive working conditions and benefits that support flexibility, well-being and career development. We promote a healthy work–life balance within a dynamic, international research environment.

Location

Located at the UAB Campus with a vibrant academic environment, we are surrounded by leading research centres and infrastructures, including ICMAB, CNM and ALBA Synchrotron. We also have excellent public transport connections to reach the city of Barcelona.

Excellence recognised across Europe

With 11 European Research Council (ERC) grants since its establishment in 2013 and 13 European Innovation Council (EIC) grants under Horizon Europe since 2021, ICN2 demonstrates its strength in pioneering research and turning scientific discoveries into technologies with impact.

Scientific Excellence

ICN2 has been recognised as a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence three times — in 2014, 2018 and 2022 — the highest distinction for research centres in Spain. Working here means being part of an institution where scientific rigour is the standard, not the exception.

Research Support Infrastructure

Our highly qualified specialists support experimental work across disciplines, lowering barriers and opening new lines of investigation. Their goal is to provide expertise that may be lacking in research laboratories and to foster collaborations among scientists as well as interdisciplinary research. Additionally, our research groups have access to advanced shared facilities, including electron microscopy, nanofabrication, spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and more.
