The updated publication includes MaX’s latest schools and provides a detailed overview of the training activity developed throughout the project in the fields of high-performance computing and computational materials science.
The MaX Centre of Excellence for Materials Design at the Exascale, in which ICN2 participates, has published a new edition of its Training Booklet, now covering the period 2023–2026.
Training is closely linked to the way MaX approaches software development. The Centre works on advanced open-source codes for materials modelling, but the usefulness of these tools also depends on the ability of researchers to understand them, use them effectively and integrate them into increasingly complex computational workflows.
To support this, MaX has organised schools, workshops, hackathons and other practical learning activities aimed at researchers at different stages of their careers. Some are introductory, while others focus on more specialised methods, advanced simulations or the efficient use of HPC resources.
A significant part of this programme revolves around the MaX flagship codes (QUANTUM ESPRESSO, YAMBO, SIESTA, BigDFT and FLEUR). In many of the training activities, participants are able to work directly with these tools and interact with the developers and researchers involved in their evolution.
This creates a setting in which training goes beyond the conventional format of lectures and presentations. Participants can test methods, discuss technical issues, compare approaches and gain a better understanding of how software is used in real computational materials research.
MaX Training Booklet 2023–2026 captures this work and places the different activities in context. It serves as a record of the training organised during the project, but also as a reflection of the way expertise is exchanged within a large European research collaboration.
For ICN2, participation in MaX is part of its wider activity in computational nanoscience and advanced materials modelling, and the training programme is one of the ways in which this shared expertise reaches a broader research community.
