GraphCat seeks to consolidate a leading position in the graphene-based technologies market

by Àlex Argemí

This initiative, managed by the ICN2 and scientifically coordinated by the ICN2 and ICFO, will promote a strong community to develop cutting-edge graphene technologies for and by Catalan industry. It was presented on 4 December this year at the ICN2, in an event to kick start the creation of a project portfolio that simultaneously drives progress and showcases regional excellence.

Different stakeholders met at the ICN2 on 4 December to start building the GraphCAT Community. The vision of this community is to establish Catalonia as an international reference in graphene research, development and innovation, with multiple local industries deriving strong competitive advantage in the global marketplace through the integration of proprietary graphene technologies into their products and services.

GraphCAT will achieve this by cultivating a strong community of international graphene researchers, practitioners and businesses, bringing their combined expertise to the development of cutting-edge graphene technologies for and by Catalan industry. It will also provide support for the transfer of technology to industry, as well as the creation of spin-off companies.

The ICN2 is the Administrative Coordinator of this initiative, while the Scientific and Technical Coordination is shared by ICREA Prof. Jose A. Garrido (ICN2) and ICREA Prof. Frank Koppens (ICFO). Work to build and coordinate the activities of the community began by inviting all stakeholders operating out of the Catalonia region to an event to discuss how the region can consolidate its leadership in the international graphene-based technologies market.

The main activity of the GraphCAT Community is to curate and develop a project portfolio that simultaneously drives progress and showcases regional excellence. To this end the coordinators have established a simple process for submitting GraphCAT project proposals for possible co-funding in a near future. All projects should be aimed at the development of new graphene technologies and applications that lead to new products and services.
