'Nature' interviews Prof. Laura Lechuga on light-based sensors for on-site diagnostics

by Virginia Greco

Nanophotonic (bio)sensors and some leading researchers working on various applications of this family of technologies are featured in an article in the “Nature Tech” Collection.

In a feature article recently published in “Nature”, science journalist Diana Kwon discusses a few of the recent developments in the technology field of light-based nano-sensors and -biosensors, exploring in particular their evolution towards point-of-need applications –i.e., devices that can be deployed at the site where they are required. She also highlights some of the roadblocks that delay or prevent such new technologies to reach the market and be extensively employed, especially in the medical field.

She interviewed various researchers who exploit the properties of light to identify and quantify the presence of specific compounds in different kinds of sample, such as blood, biological serum, water, foodstuffs, etc. Among them is Prof. Laura Lechuga, leader of the ICN2 NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group, who explained the advantages of the nanophotonic sensors that she and her group are continuing to develop for rapid diagnostics of COVID-19 and other infections or diseases.
