by Oriol Roig

Jordi Portabella, Director of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI), discusses with ICN2 Group Leader Prof. Victor Puntes about a new study on the use of gold nanoparticles to fight the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

A study conducted by the Hospital Vall d’Hebron Institut de Recerca (VHIR) under the leadership of ICREA Prof. Victor Puntes, Group Leader of the ICN2 Inorganic Nanoparticles Group and the CIBBIM – Nanomedicine Group at VHIR, demonstrated that gold nanoparticles can reactivate natural killer cells of the immune system to attack the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) inside infected cells. Prof. Puntes was interviewed by the director of the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (Fundació Catalana per la Recerca i la Innovació - FCRI), Jordi Portabella, in regard to this study, which was carried out in-vitro. In the interview, Prof. Puntes explains how the nanoparticles act as a ‘velcro’ adhesive, attaching the natural killer cells to the infected one.
