Thermal Properties of Nanoscale Materials: A new research Group for the ICN2

by Oriol Roig

The GTNaM Group, led by Javier Rodríguez-Viejo, has been active since 2000 within the UAB and is now also affiliated to the ICN2. New and well known senior researchers will focus their efforts on phase transitions and thermal transport.

The ICN2 welcomes a new Group, the Thermal Properties of Nanoscale Materials (GTNaM) Group, led by Prof. Javier Rodríguez-Viejo. This Group will focus on heat capacity of low-dimensional materials, phase transitions in ultrathin films, design, development and characterization of thermoelectric devices, amongst others. Its members have been working for many years on nanocalorimetry, and will collaborate with other ICN2 groups to measure the influence of size on the phase transitions of ferroelectric oxides and the heat capacity of 2D materials.

The Group has been active at the UAB since 2000, and has become affiliated to the ICN2 in January 2021. In order to facilitate their research activity a new laboratory is being equipped with an UHV evaporation chamber for organic thin films and a high vacuum chamber for nanocalorimetric measurements of low-dimensional materials.

Prof. Javier Rodríguez-Viejo is a Professor of Applied Physics at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). The Group he leads includes Dr. Jordi Fraxedas Calduch, CSIC Scientific Researcher and former Group Leader at the ICN2, and Dr. Marta González Silveira, Dr. Aitor Lopeandia Fernández and Dr. Cristian Rodríguez Tinoco, all of them UAB Senior Researchers. Several students and junior researchers are also joining them.
