Prof. Cecília de Carvalho gives a talk for the BIST Colloquium series

by Oriol Roig

The webinar discussed the use of graphene-based biosensors for healthcare.

Dr Cecília de Carvalho Castro e Silva , visiting professor at the ICN2 in the Nanobioelectronics and Biosensors group,  on 4 May 2021 gave a talk within the BIST Colloquium series, which is a cycle of  lectures and discussion sessions with internationally recognised researchers, organized by the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) for all its members. Entitled ‘Graphene-Based Technologies for Biosensors’, it offered an overview of the fundamental properties and applications of graphene and its derivatives (graphene oxide, GO, and reduced graphene oxide, rGO) in biosensors for healthcare monitoring.

In the webinar, she briefly explained the developments that led to the discovery of graphene in the last century, then she moved on to talk about the interesting properties of this material, how they can be used in different applications in biosensors and the operation principles behind them. She also discussed the challenge to contribute to the fight against COVID-19 using graphene-based biosensors.
