“Science in Memes” is back: take part!

by Virginia Greco

Does science have a funny side? Can memes make us smile with research? That's the aim of Science in Memes! A fresh initiative to pass the (scientific) time in summer.

The Catalan Delegation of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) is hosting the third edition of the “Science in Memes” contest, with the aim to promote science from a funny and playful perspective. Open to any participant with a bit of wit, humour and an interest in science, the competition will be held on Twitter only, in order to promote the use of this social network.

In this context, it is considered meme an image that describes an idea, concept or situation, manifested in any type of virtual media and replicated on the internet. The submitted memes can be about any scientific theme, as long as their relationship to science is clear and logical. They must be original, created by the author and not have been used before.

To take part in the contest, upload your meme and (if you want) a descriptive text in a single tweet, tagging the @CSICCat account and using the hashtag #ScienceinMemes. Each participant can create as many memes as they want, but each one must be published in its own tweet. The languages accepted are: Catalan, Spanish, Galician and Basque. The meme, which will be the only multimedia content in the post, can be a static image (.jpg or .png format) or a dynamic one (.GIF format).

The competition will be open until Monday 9 August at 11.59 p.m (Peninsular Spain time). Two prizes will be awarded, consisting of a set of publications from different CSIC collections.
