“A scientist jumping over fences” hits the bookshelves

by Virginia Greco

Prof. Laura Lechuga reflects on the hustles and hurdles of her career in research and on what it means to be a woman in the scientific arena, in her book now available in bookstores.

In her book “Una científica saltando vallas” (which translates into “A (female) scientist jumping over fences”), Prof. Laura Lechuga, leader of the ICN2 NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group, looks back at her career, from when she felt the “vocation” for research to her most recent successes, delving into the problems faced by women in the scientific field, in academy as in other professional environments. She touches many sensitive topics, including stereotypes and stigma, people getting in your way, harassment in the workplace, equality and gender gaps, as well as research group dynamics.

Through her personal experience, to which many other female scientists can relate, Prof. Lechuga unveils what a woman has to face on the road to becoming a science professional, especially in a country where the presence of women in STEM disciplines is very low. Her aim is to give guidance and encouragement to women who wish to develop a scientific career, which is key to scientific and technical progress in society.

The book, published by Plataforma Editorial, is now available for purchase in many physical and online bookshops throughout the country.
