ICREA Prof. María Escudero honored at the 'Extremeños de Hoy' awards ceremony

ICREA Prof. María Escudero-Escribano of the ICN2 NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry Group was distinguished at the 35th 'Extremeños de Hoy' awards on November 9, 2023, in Cáceres. This prestigious event, recognizing individuals who have significantly contributed to the Extremadura region, lauded Prof. Escudero for her groundbreaking work in renewable energy conversion and sustainable chemistry. The ceremony also honored other prominent figures for their outstanding contributions across various fields, emphasizing the region's rich cultural and intellectual heritage. 

The 35th 'Extremeños de Hoy' awards, organized by the HOY de Extremadura newspaper and sponsored by Iberdrola, Junta de Extremadura, and the Ayuntamiento de Cáceres, were held on November 9, 2023, at the Palacio de Congresos in Cáceres. This prestigious event celebrated the achievements of individuals who have significantly elevated the profile of the Extremadura region.

Among the award winners was ICREA Prof. María Escudero Escribano, Group Leader of the ICN2 NanoElectrocatalysis and Sustainable Chemistry Group. Prof. Escudero-Escribano, a dedicated scientist, was recognized for her pioneering work in electrochemistry and catalysis for decarbonisation, particularly in renewable energy conversion and storage as well as production of sustainable fuels and chemicals.

The event also honored other remarkable individuals, including Juan Manuel Benítez, a journalist from Badajoz who has made significant contributions to journalism in New York and recently transitioned to teaching at Columbia University's School of Journalism. Fernando Palacios, the president of Cajalmendralejo, was recognized for his leadership in the financial sector and his commitment to societal improvement. Additionally, the award ceremony acknowledged the achievements of Emilio Tuñón, an architect with profound ties to Cáceres, celebrated for his contributions to the architectural landscape.

The ceremony was marked by speeches, recognition of talent across various fields, and performances that celebrated the rich cultural and intellectual heritage of Extremadura. Prof. Escudero, in her acceptance speech, emphasized the importance of scientific advancement, gender equality in science, and the urgent need for societal and environmental change.

This annual event, returning to Cáceres, highlighted the exceptional talents of Extremadura's sons and daughters, underscoring their contributions both within the region and on the international stage. Prof. Escudero's award is a testament to her vital role in advancing sustainable solutions and her significant impact on the global movement towards decarbonization.
