ICN2 participates in the inaugural event of the Barcelona’s NOVUM Science Festival

ICREA Research Prof Daniel Maspoch, Group Leader of the ICN2 Supramolecular NanoChemistry & Materials, introduced Dr. Javier Garcia Martinez, director of the Nanotechnology Laboratory at the University of Alacant and cofounder of Rive Technology Inc. (Boston, MA). The event, held on April 15 at the Barcelona City Hall, was the inaugural conference of the NOVUM Program.

The NOVUM Festival is the celebration of Science, Technology and Innovation of Barcelona. In a dynamic and international city like this, science is emerging as a central issue of debate and culture. The NOVUM Festival is the consolidation of previous initiatives that keep on growing year after year.

ICN2 is involved in the present edition of the Festival, like it was in the previous ones. During the 2015 NOVUM Festival ICN2 participated through CSIC Prof Pablo Ordejón, ICN2 Director, in a breakfast about entrepreneurship with companies on Monday April 13. (Boston, MA), on April 15 at the Barcelona City Hall. The event was the inaugural conference of the NOVUM Program.

The talk by Dr. Javier Garcia Martinez, entitled “The adventure of science entrepreneurship”, was an inspiring portrait of his experience as a scientist in the process of creating a successful company. He encouraged the audience to dare to try something new, and suggested the educational community to redesign the hierarchic structure of the Spanish educational system. Discussion is the ground for innovation. Knowledge is not owned only by the teacher but comes from the sum of the experience treasured by all the persons in the classroom together. The talk was appealing and celebrated by the audience.

ICREA Research Prof Daniel Maspoch underlined the spirit of the speaker, and compared it with the ICN2 activity regarding technology transfer. Transference to society is a must in nowadays research, both in the form of products and knowledge. This transference is especially relevant when it comes to research areas such as nanotechnology, which have a direct impact on our everyday life.

ICN2 will keep on collaborating with the NOVUM Festival, and will be present at the Science Fair to be celebrated on April 25-26. This event will turn Barcelona into an open air laboratory this dissemination activities and experiences for all ages.
