First session of the 2015-2016 NanoEduca program held at CCCB

About 90 High School teachers attended the event on July the 7th and they were introduced to the nanoworld. The organizing committee formed by ICN2, UB, UAB and CESIRE explained the different steps of the program and gave some tools and resources to communicate nanoscience. ICREA Prof Victor Puntes gave a talk about the state-of-the art of nanomaterials.

About 90 High School teachers reunited on 7th July at the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona (CCCB) to attend the first session of this year’s NanoEduca program. The Program, an initiative coordinated by UB, ICN2, UAB and CESIRE, has the aim to offer tools and methodologies to introduce nanoscience and nanotechnology in the classroom. For this, different sessions will take place during the next year where they will discuss with representatives from the organizing institutions about how to communicate the nanoworld. The Nanoeduca Program is a pilot initiative that seeks to create a long term link between the educational community and the institutions where nanoscience and nanotechnology research takes place.

The meeting started with a presentation by Barbara Roig, from the CCCB, who welcomed the assistants to their facilities and highlighted the importance of the bonds between art and science. After her, Jordi Diaz (UB), general coordinator of the NanoEduca, gave a talk about what are nanotechnologies.

ICREA Prof Victor Puntes, Group Leader at ICN2 an VHRI, was invited to discuss about nanomaterials and their present and future applications. He offered some very interesting ideas about the uses of this new kind of technology and the impact that is having in society.

Jordi Diaz and Gerard Saborit (UB) gave then a more practical talk about resources to learn and explain nanoscience and the tools and experiments to perform with the students, respectively. They recommended books, webpages, videos and some experiments that can be very useful to transmit the nanoworld.

Hereafter, Joan Mendoza (UB) and Ricard Solé (UPF) introduced the CCCB exhibition +Humans. The program NanoEduca wants to encourage both students and teachers to visit the exhibition that will be opened on October. +Humans will explore the future of humanity from an evolutionary point of view and nanotechnology has much to say about this fact.

Finally, the coordinators of the project from the different institutions presented the next steps for the program. Jordi Diaz (UB), Julio Pérez (CESIRE) and Alex Argemi (ICN2) explained the contents of the future sessions and introduced one of the key elements of the initiative: the NanoKit. Details about its contents and the logistics on its use where explained and teachers were encouraged to try the experience in their centres as it is a promising way to introduce the nanoworld to the students.

The first session of the Program was a huge success and most of the teachers expressed interest to participate in the next steps of the initiative. Now 24 teachers will be selected attending criteria such as their expression of interest and their geographical location. The collaboration between all the institutions (UB, ICN2, UAB, CESIRE and CCCB) has been essential to achieve these good results.
