RECORDANT MANUEL CARDONA, a ceremony in memory of the deceased Professor, organized by ICMAB-CSIC and ICN2, will take place tomorrow at ICMAB Meeting Room from 9:15 to 14:00.
Prof. Dr. Manuel Cardona was born in Barcelona in 1934. After obtaining a Master in Physics in 1955 from University of Barcelona he received a PhD in Applied Physics at Harvard. He also worked in Switzerland, USA, Argentina and Germany. In 1971 he moved to Stuttgart, Germany, as a founding director of the then-recently created Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research.
He was a source of inspiration and support during the first stages of the creation of ICN2. He was a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of this Institute and established a close relation with numerous researchers and workers at ICN2.
In 1985 he was invested doctor honoris causa by the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (UAB). He was also awarded with the 1988 Prince of Asturias prize for research among many other awards. In 1993, when the ALBA Synchrotron project began, Prof. Manuel Cardona was the president of the Advisory Committee of the Synchrotron Light Laboratory. He was involved in different scientific institutions in Catalonia and worked together with CSIC in the creation and consolidation of its Materials Sciences Institutes, like the Institute of Materials Science of Barcelona (ICMAB-CSIC).
Prof. Dr. Manuel Cardona passed away in July 2nd, 2014.
