Science Week at the ICN2

by Àlex Argemí

ICN2 researchers were involved in a number of dissemination activities held during Science Week (9-18 November 2018). The figure of Richard Feynman and science aimed at young girls were the theme of some of the events in which the ICN2 participated during this intense week.

This year's Science Week (9-18 November 2018) had a special flavour because of the 100 anniversary of Prof. Richard Feynman’s birthday (1918-1988). One of the greatest physicists of the 20th century, and considered the father of nanotechnology, his figure was praised in some of the dissemination activities led by the ICN2 and its researchers.

For instance, Miguel Angel Moreno, FPI – Severo Ochoa PhD student at the Nanostructured Functional Materials Group, shared with Prof. Jordi Pascual, Professor of Physics at the UAB and former director of the ICN2 (2005-2012), a talk in Viladecans about the bases of Nanotechnology and how it is inspired by nature. This and other activities celebrated in this city included references to the figure of Prof. Richard Feynman.

On the other hand, the Vil·la Urània Civic Center in Barcelona held the final event of the Feynman Total series of events, where different ICN2 researchers have been involved. A drawing of Richard Feynman courtesy of the ICN2 invited visitors to take a picture with this great scientist and communicator.

Dr. César Moreno, Senior Researcher at the ICN2 Atomic Manipulation and Spectroscopy Group, offered on 12 November a talk entitled “From molecules to atomically precise low dimensional materials” at ICMAB’s Sala d'Actes Carles Miravitlles and was involved in the "Joves Científics 2018" event held on 16 November at the Parc de Recerca Biomèdica de Barcelona (PRBB) with an activity involving quantum physics and Lego blocks.

Finally, in an event oriented to young female science-lovers, the ICN2 was also involved in the first edition of the Science&Tech Girls Vallès, held on 18 November in Sabadell at the Vapor Badia Library. A workshop led by the ICN2 researchers Dr. Adriana Isabel Figueroa and Dr. Regina Galceran, Postdoctoral Researchers at the ICN2 Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices Group, together with Dr. Juliana Jaramillo, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Phononic and Photonic Nanostructures, introduced the participants to the concept of nanoscale and some of its applications. On the main hall of the library, members of the Societat Catalana de Nanociència i Nanotecnologia (SCN2) welcomed visitors with a stand showcasing ICN2 technologies and selected contents of the travelling exhibit Dimensió Nano. Prof. Richard Feynman was not seen there.
