Nano-Researchers’ Night 2019 at the Cosmo Caixa

by Virginia Greco

A hint of the nanoworld marvels and of a few great applications of nanotechnology were brought by the ICN2 to the European Researchers’ Night, organized by the Cosmo Caixa and held on September 27.

Since its first edition in 2005, every year the European Researchers’ Night has brought science, technology and their protagonists – the researchers – closer to the general public. Through a constellation of outreach events, organized across Europe on the last Friday of September, people are offered the occasion to visit research centres and interact with experts in different field.

The ICN2 participated in this year's edition contributing talks and hands-on activities to a largest event organized at the Cosmo Caixa Science Museum in Barcelona, involving various Catalan research institutions. Members of the ICN2 Marketing and Communication Department, together with Dr César Moreno Sierra, Dr Marianna Sledzinska and Dr Neus Domingo-Marimón, animated workshops for adults and children. Part of the Dimensió Nano traveling exhibit, funded by the ICN2 Severo Ochoa Programme, was also set up and informative videos produced by the ICN2 were displayed.

Visitors were introduced to some of the wonders of nanoscience and a few noteworthy applications to medicine and electronics. Prof. Laura Lechuga gave a talk on new rapid and less invasive diagnostics methods based on nanotechnology, while Dr. Adriana Figueroa described the fascinating characteristics and great potentialities of bidimensional materials as graphene.

Activities, talks and a theatre performance went on from 19:30 to 23:00. Participants hopefully left the event with increased curiosity for science and more awareness about nanotechnology and its impact on our society.
