Hortensia Roig Prize for Children's Literature: call for entries

by Virginia Greco

Scientific and technical vocation can be generated and fostered in girls by engaging them with stories for children that feature girls and women working or dealing with science and technology. With this objective in mind, EDEM Foundation President Hortensia Roig organises a children’s literature competition.

Hortensia Roig, president of the EDEM Business School Foundation and member of the Board of Directors of Mercadona, has launched a children's fiction competition that aims to promote “different” social and professional models through literature for young readers. In particular, by nurturing them with stories whose protagonists are girls and women who work, study or are active in scientific fields, a new imaginary can be created for children and a vocation for science and technology can be aroused and encouraged in girls.

What are they looking for?

Adult writers of Spanish nationality are invited to submit a short novel aimed at readers aged 8 to 10. The subject matter is free, but the texts must feature girls or women (either relevant historical personalities or fictional characters) and the authors have to keep in mind the purpose of the initiative while creating their stories. The length has to be between 35 and 50 pages in A4 format.

The deadline for entries is 31 May 2022. The winners will be announced in September. The 1st ranked will receive a prize of 8.000€ and their novel will be published. 2.000€ will be given to the second finalist work.

The jury will be made up of: Ana Lluch, best oncologist in Spain, Laura Lechuga, Juan de la Cierva National Research Awardee and leader of the NanoBiosensors and Bioanalytical Applications Group at the ICN2, Gloria Lomana, President of GL 50&50, Jordi Nadal, CEO and founder of Plataforma Editorial, and Hortensia Roig, President of EDEM.
