During an ICN2 Seminar held on July 14, Prof Shane G. Telfer, from the Institute of Fundamental Sciences of the Massey University (New Zealand), summarised the research performed by his Group in the area of multicomponent Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOF). The talk, introduced by the ICREA Prof Daniel Maspoch, was entitled “Aspects of Metal-Organic Framework Chemistry”.

Together with his collaborators, Prof Shane G. Telfer has discovered ways to build up ordered MOFs from three different organic linkers in combination with a metal clusters. This allows the researchers to functionalize the pore spaces very precisely. Unexpected gas sorption trends, high stability to water vapour and tuneable catalytic properties all emerge from these multicomponent MOFs.

During the second part of his talk, the speaker outlined a series of MOFs in which partial degrees of interpenetration can be controlled. This is achieved by two means: either by direct growth of partially interpenetrated lattices or by the thermal single-crystal to single-crystal conversion of a noninterpenetrated framework into its interpenetrated counterpart (“autocatenation”).
