MaX is an European center of excellence driving the exascale transition
MaX gathers leading developers and users of materials applications, together with top experts in future High Performance Computing. ICN2 is among the 5 research centers involved in this initiative through the ICN2 Theory and Simulation Group, led by Prof Pablo Ordejón.
MaX was born to support developers and end users of advanced applications for materials simulations, design and discovery, and works at the frontiers of the current and future High Performance Computing (HPC) technologies. It is one of the eight ‘European Centers of Excellence for HPC applications’ supported by the EU under its H2020 e-INFRA-2015 call.
MaX gathers leading developers and users of materials applications, together with top experts in HPC. It is based on the collaboration of 13 teams, located at 5 research teams, including the ICN2 Theory and Simulation Group, led by Prof Pablo Ordejón, Director of ICN2, 5 supercomputing centres, including the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), 1 educational institute and 2 business partners. Together they configure a centre of excellence aimed to disenthrall the EU leadership in materials modelling, simulations, discovery and design.
MaX concurrently works to develop a new application and data ecosystem, and to serve its industrial and academic community through end-user oriented actions. Key actions include advancing materials simulations codes; building the materials modelling and data ecosystem; and, enabling the exascale transition, which means seeking computing systems capable of at least a billion billion calculations per second.
MaX started its activity on September 1st 2015. Prof. Elisa Molinari, MaX coordinator, has communicated the MaX launch at the PSI-K 2015 conference in San Sebastian. The Project Kick-Off Meeting will be held in Modena next December 15, where Prof Pablo Ordejón will lead a session entitled “Industrial end-users and materials research: strategy and pilot cases”.
