II Severo Ochoa Scientific Workshop

Doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and Group Leaders from the ICN2 celebrated the second Severo Ochoa Scientific Workshop. Through more than 30 presentations, the attendance obtained a detailed picture of the ICN2 research done so far in the context of the Severo Ochoa award.

The Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness acknowledged ICN2 in 2014 as a Severo Ochoa Excellence Center. This Programme recognizes the excellence of the scientific contributions of institutions, their industrial potential, social impact and capacity for talent attraction. Only 21 research centers have been awarded with this distinction. The funding provided by the ICN2 Severo Ochoa award is focused in a Program on "Nanodevices for Social Challenges". It is largely devoted to the recruitment of staff and the procurement of equipment to support the development of research projects.

In the context of the Severo Ochoa award, ICN2 uses scientific knowledge generated in-house to develop specific applications and devices, which are able to reach the market. They provide new solutions to major social challenges in three core areas (Energy, Life and Information technology and telecommunications) through four transversal methodological approaches (Growth and synthesis of nanomaterials, Nanofabrication, Characterisation and metrology and Theory simulation.

In order to get the ICN2 community updated on the research done in the context of the Severo Ochoa Program, on November 7 and 8 took place the second Severo Ochoa Scientific Workshop. Prof. Pablo Ordejón, Director of ICN2, opened the Workshop overviewing the common goals of the Institute related to the Severo Ochoa Program. Further, he focused on the collaboration between research groups; he also mentioned that all Departments from ICN2 are important to reach the proposed objectives.

During the Workshop, more than 30 doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers and Group Leaders from ICN2 had the opportunity to share their investigations in connection to the Severo Ochoa Program. The cooperation between groups became clear in the presentations. In the closure talk, Prof. Pablo Ordejón congratulated all the speakers for their excellent presentations and aimed them to keep working together to achieve higher goals.
