BIST reveals the five Ignite seed projects for 2018

Today the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) announce the five projects that will receive seed funding under the 2018 edition of its Ignite programme to accelerate multidisciplinary research at its member institutes.

Since 2017 the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) has earmarked €500,000 for its Ignite programme to accelerate multidisciplinary research at its member institutes. In this first phase of the 2018 edition, five projects have been selected by international experts to receive seed funding. The teams will have eight months to conduct the proposed research, after which time the two most promising projects will be chosen to receive funding for second stage of development, lasting 12 months.

More information, including the full list of projects being funded, can be found here.

For its part, the ICN2 is taking part in two of the selected projects. SOLHYCAT brings together the expertise of the ICN2 Inorganic Nanoparticles Group led by ICREA Prof. Víctor F. Puntes, who will be collaborating with Dr. Antonio Llobet of ICIQ to make the production of hydrogen as a clean energy source more efficient and affordable. Meanwhile, 2DNANOHEAT pools the knowledge of four BIST research groups to develop a new type of thermoelectric and photodetection devices for use in medical diagnostics and the design of computer components. The project itself will be led by Dr Klaas-Jan Tielrooij of ICFO and Dr Marianna Sledzinska of the ICN2, and will draw on the expertise of the groups led by professors Niek van Hulst and Frank Koppens (ICFO) and professors Clivia M. Sotomayor and Sergio O. Valenzuela (ICN2).
