Quantum Matter Conference: a very successful second edition in Barcelona

by Virginia Greco

After the enthusiastic reception of the first edition (Bilbao, 2021), this second appointment of the Quantum Matter Conference renews its success with great participation by representatives of academia, research and industry. The ICN2 is among the organisers of the event.

The Quantum Matter 2022 Conference, held in Barcelona (Spain) from 21 to 23 June, wrapped up after three days of intense participation, exchange of scientific results and ideas, and networking between experts in quantum information and materials. The rich scientific programme –articulated in plenary talks, parallel oral sessions, and a poster session— was complemented by an industrial forum and an exhibition, which offered a meeting point for the academic and research world and the entrepreneurial one, with the aim of facilitating the introduction of these new technologies in the real life.

The Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2), which is one of the organisers of the conference and an important actor in quantum materials research, both within the Catalan and Spanish environment and at international level, participated in the event contributing various talks and posters, chairing a few sessions, and hosting a booth in the exhibition space. Among the speakers and chairpersons who took the stage, in front of a packed auditorium –something really exciting to see after a long period of pandemic—, were ICREA Prof. Stephan Roche, leader of the Theoretical and Computational Nanoscience Group, ICREA Prof. Sergio O. Valenzuela, head of the Physics and Engineering of Nanodevices Group, and Prof. Pablo Ordejón, ICN2 Director and leader of the Theory and Simulation Group.

At the booth, attendees could meet not only ICN2 researchers, but also members of the Marketing and Communication Department (Àlex Argemí, who is the Head, and Dr Virginia Greco) and of the  Business and Innovation Area (Andrés Cano), who provided to interested people information and an overview of the vast portfolio of activities related with quantum materials, simulations and technologies developed at our institute. With over 400 subscribers and a very international participation, the Quantum Matter 2022 Conference has been a great success, consolidating the remarkable response obtained by the previous edition held in Bilbao.

The event was organized by the Phantoms Foundation, the ICN2, the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) and the Spanish Council for Scientific Research (CSIC). The Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST), the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) and the Quantum Technologies Platform of the CSIC (QTEP-CSIC) were partners.

See you next year in the quantum world!
