A great sixth edition of the BIST Symposium on Microscopy, Nanoscopy and Imaging Sciences

by Virginia Greco

The 2023 edition of the Symposium, which is also included in the BIST Master’s Winter School, focused in particular on the use of machine learning to enhance image analysis.

A new edition of the BIST Symposium on Microscopy, Nanoscopy and Imaging Sciences, an annual open event which brings together internationally renowned keynote speakers and members of the BIST Community, was held on March 10 at the Institute for Photonic Sciences (ICFO).

The four morning talks focused on electron microscopy and some of its latest developments and applications, with reference speakers as Prof. Christina Scheu, from the Max-Planck-Institut für Eisenforschung, who presented the use of scanning transmission electron microscopy to solve imperfections in solar cells dedicated to generating electricity, and Prof. Sergei V. Kalinin, from the University of Tennessee, who talked about the recent progress in automated experiment in electron microscopy. The audience could also learn from Dr Patricia Abellan, from the Institute of Materials of Nantes Jean Rouxel, CNRS, and Prof. Carmen Rubio-Verdú, who has recently joined ICFO as a new faculty member and Group Leader.

In the afternoon, the talks by Dr Sophie Brasselet (Institute Fresnel), Prof. Ricardo Henriques (Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência) and Prof. Giovanni Volpe (University of Gothenburg), focused on optical microscopy and machine learning.

The Symposium is also part of the BIST Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences curriculum and it is included in the Winter School on Microscopy, Nanoscopy, and Imaging Sciences, which is coordinated by ICREA Prof. Maria García Parajo (ICFO) and ICREA Prof. Jordi Arbiol, leader of the Advanced Electron Nanoscopy Group at the ICN2. A poster session is organised within the Symposium to allow students to present their projects. The best ones are selected by a dedicated panel of experts and receive an award.

The 2023 BIST Symposium on Microscopy, Nanoscopy and Imaging Sciences was organised in collaboration with ICFO and ICN2, and was sponsored by the Sociedad de Microscopia de España, the European Microscopy Society and Thermo Fisher.
